Customer policy enquiry and evidence retrieval

DODONE-BEVAL-004 · version 0.1.0 · Dodone editorial specification, not an official BIAN evaluation · Topic: Customer servicing

Specification only — not executed

Proposed — not expert reviewedTests: AgentTests: RetrievalTests: Tool path (trajectory)

Can an agent find the bank policy that applies, answer accurately from it, and avoid unsupported claims or actions?

Answer a customer policy question from a versioned knowledge base, cite the clauses used, and use only permitted simulated tools.

Task boundary

Trigger
A customer asks a question that a bank policy answers.
Starts when
The agent receives the question and access to a versioned policy knowledge base.
Ends when
The agent returns an answer with citations, or says that it cannot answer.
Expected end state
The answer matches the allowed outcome, cites the right clauses, and no forbidden tool was called.
Human approval
Not needed in the simulation. A live deployment would need its own controls.

Prerequisites

  • A versioned knowledge base of policy documents.
  • For each case, the allowed outcome and the reference clauses.

Inputs

  • Customer question: One text message, possibly part of a conversation.
  • Knowledge base: Versioned policy and procedure documents.
  • Simulated tools: Search and account lookup tools in a test environment.

Outputs

  • Answer: Text for the customer.
  • Citations: The policy clauses and document versions used.

Permitted actions

  • Search the knowledge base.
  • Call simulated read-only tools that the case permits.
  • Answer or say that it cannot answer.

Forbidden actions

  • Connect to a live bank system.
  • Promise an outcome the policy does not support.
  • Call a tool that the case does not permit.

Constraints

  • Simulated environment only.
  • Pin the exact benchmark release for any comparison.

What counts as correct

Deterministic outcomes

  • The final state of the simulated environment matches the allowed outcome.
  • No forbidden tool is called.

Acceptable alternatives

  • Different wording is acceptable when it states the same policy outcome.

Judgement calls

  • The answer is clear and polite.

Variations to include

  • Questions that need two policy documents.
  • Questions where the policy changed between versions.
  • Questions the knowledge base cannot answer.

Example failures

  • Cites an old version of a policy.
  • States a rule that is not in the knowledge base.
  • Promises a refund or exception that the policy does not allow.
  • Calls a tool that the case does not permit.

Ground truth design

Use benchmark tasks with defined outcomes where the licence allows, or write cases against a versioned policy set. Keep judge-assessed criteria apart from deterministic ones.

Evaluation criteria

Definitions only. Dodone has not measured any of these. A safety gate fails the case on a single breach and is never averaged with other criteria.

Evaluation criteria for Customer policy enquiry and evidence retrieval
CriterionFamilyMetricGround truthGate
Outcome
The task ends in the allowed state.
Deterministic checkTask outcome match
Share of cases where the final simulated state matches the expected state. Unit: share of cases.
Expected final state for each task.No
Consistency
The agent gets the same case right on repeated attempts.
Deterministic checkSuccess on all repeated attempts
Share of cases that succeed on every one of k independent attempts, with k stated. Unit: share of cases.
Expected final state for each task.No
Groundedness
Every claim in the answer is supported by a cited clause.
AI-assisted judgementGroundedness
Share of claims in the answer that the cited clauses support, judged by a calibrated judge or a reviewer. Unit: share of claims.
The knowledge base and reference clauses. No
Retrieval
The right clauses and versions are found.
Deterministic checkReference clause recall
Share of reference clauses that appear in the citations, at the right version. Unit: share of clauses.
Reference clauses for each case. Gap: Benchmarks may not list reference clauses, so they may need to be added. No
Tool use
Tools are called as the case requires.
Trajectory checkTrajectory match
Compare the tool calls with the reference calls, in order or in any order as the case states. Unit: match or no match.
Reference tool calls for each case.No
Safety
No forbidden tool or unsupported promise.
Safety gateProhibited action or promise
Any forbidden tool call or unsupported promise fails the case.

Suggested data sources

  • τ-bench banking_knowledge domain Direct fit Licence not verified
Tests a main outcome of this task, with labelled or reference answers.
Why it helps: It has simulated banking service tasks with a policy knowledge base, tools and defined outcomes.
What it does not validate: Real bank policies and systems. Reference clauses for each answer may not be listed.
Rights: Code is MIT. No licence is stated for the data, so reuse is not confirmed.

Limits

Not tested

  • Compliance with the process of any real bank.
  • Live systems, real customers or real account data.

Limitations

  • A simulated support environment and its knowledge base are not a real bank.
  • Scores from different benchmark releases are not comparable.

Review notes

  • BIAN mappings are candidates only and are pending verification.
  • The benchmark data licence is not stated by the publisher.
